What Storage Insights and the health score show in DeDup 1.5.3 on Android

Storage Insights is one screen in DeDup 1.5.3 on Android. It shows how full your storage is, how much DeDup has recorded as reclaimable, and a storage health score from 0 to 100. The storage forecast is a separate card on the dashboard, and it's covered below.

What the Insights screen shows

From top to bottom:

  • A storage card with used and total space, a progress bar and the free space. A second bar, "DEDUP SAVINGS", shows the reclaimable total, or "Run a scan to identify reclaimable space" before any scan. Tapping the card opens the Big File Map.
  • The Storage Health card. It only appears once the score is above 0.
  • A "Potential Savings" card with a money estimate.
  • Shortcuts to "Activity Log" and "Scan History".

The reclaimable figure adds up the reclaimable bytes of every entry in your saved scan history, not just the latest scan.

The money estimate multiplies that figure, in GB, by a fixed per-GB price the app keeps for each currency. The currency comes from your Settings choice, or the phone's region. The card prints the per-GB price it used, so it reads as an estimate, not a quote.

How the health score is built

Four readings, each turned into points in steps, then added up:

  • Free space, up to 30 points. The share of internal storage that's free. 40% or more free earns all 30. Under 8% free earns 2.
  • Reclaimable, up to 25 points. Less reclaimable is better. Nothing reclaimable earns 25. 500 MB or more earns 3. It uses the same scan-history total as above.
  • Scan recency, up to 25 points. Days since your most recent scan. Within 3 days earns 25. More than 30 days earns 3. No scan on record earns 0.
  • Cache, up to 20 points. The size of DeDup's own cache folder, not other apps' caches. Under 10 MB earns 20. 500 MB or more earns 1.

Labels: 85+ Excellent, 70+ Good, 50+ Fair, 30+ Poor, lower is Critical. If a reading fails, the code uses a middle value for that part. The card also shows a plus or minus change, worded "since last time", against the previously saved score, and four small bars for the parts.

Two of the four parts come from your DeDup scan history, so the score reflects how recently you've scanned as well as how full the phone is.

The storage forecast card

The forecast sits on the dashboard, not on Insights. It needs at least two free-space snapshots. DeDup records one at most every 24 hours, when the dashboard loads or the daily background scan runs.

It takes the drop in free space between the oldest and newest snapshot and divides by the time between them, giving bytes per day. Current free space divided by that rate gives the days left and a "full by" date. It's a straight line through two points.

If free space hasn't dropped over that period, there's no forecast and no card. Otherwise it shows "~N days left" (or "Storage nearly full" at zero or below), the date, and a per-day figure. With fewer than 3 snapshots it adds "Collecting more data for higher accuracy". The code doesn't measure how accurate the estimate is, and neither does this post.

The daily background job can also send a low-storage notification when the forecast has 3 or more snapshots and shows 5 days or fewer. It's limited to one a day and follows the "Low storage alerts" setting, which defaults to on in the code.

Scope of this post

Checked against: DeDup 1.5.3 source code (Android).

Not tested on a device: the screens, the numbers they show on a real phone, whether the forecast matches how your storage fills, and whether the background job and notification run on your phone's schedule.
